Can I replace an electrical outlet myself safely and correctly?

You can replace a standard outlet yourself only if it’s a like-for-like swap and you can shut off power and verify it’s off. If the outlet is damaged, ungrounded, in a damp/outdoor area, or the wiring is unknown, hire a licensed electrician. Upgrades, aluminum wiring, smart devices, or GFCI work are not DIY-friendly. Incorrect wiring can cause shock or fire.

Quick checks:

  • Turn off the correct breaker.
  • Verify no power with a voltage tester.
  • Match device type and rating to the existing circuit and wires.
  • Move wires one at a time to the same terminals.
  • Restore power and test.
